Tampa’s Favorite Easy Black Bean Hummus

What's Special
Chef Ciji Castro’s Cuban-inspired recipe for Tampa's favorite Mojo Black Bean Hummus. A fan favorite from Mayor Castor's Hispanic Heritage Celebration!

This Mojo Black Bean Hummus is a fusion of Cuban mojo (garlic, citrus, and warmth) and the creamy texture of Mediterranean hummus. It’s smooth, bright, and soulful all at once.

As a proud Cuban-American and founder of Domestic Gourmet, I’ve always believed food tells the story of who we are. For the City of Tampa Mayor’s 37th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration, I wanted to serve something that captured both my heritage and my passion for modern flavor.

Black Bean Hummus: A Celebration of Culture and Creativity

When I learned that 200 guests would attend during their one-hour lunch break, I knew I had to create something grab-and-go yet unforgettable.

I chose to individually package Mojo Black Bean Hummus into cups and pair it with an assortment of plantain chips —sweet, salty, and lime-flavored. Each guest could take one, enjoy it quickly, and still feel they’d had an authentic culinary experience.

It was a hit! Guests kept asking, “Where can I order this?”—and moments like that remind me why I love what I do: connecting people to culture through food.

Why Black Bean Hummus?

This dish is my way of saying that heritage and innovation can coexist beautifully in one bite. The Mojo Black Bean Hummus celebrates the Latin flavors I grew up with, while paying tribute to the diversity that makes Tampa such a vibrant culinary city.

Thank you, Mayor Castor, and to the City of Tampa, for letting Domestic Gourmet be part of this unforgettable day.

At Domestic Gourmet, we celebrate Latin heritage through handcrafted, clean ingredients like our Organic Annatto OilAceite de Achiote and Organic Adobo.

From the Tampa Theatre’s stage lights to your kitchen table, this Cuban-inspired hummus proves that tradition and innovation belong together in every bite.

Ingredients

Instructions

Make the mojo

  • In a pan, warm the annatto oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until tender but not translucent. Stir in minced garlic for 15–20 seconds, just until fragrant. Remove from heat, then add the lime juice and zest. Set aside to cool slightly.

Make the hummus

  • In a food processor, combine the black beans, bean liquid, adobo, and prepared mojo. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides with a spatula as needed.
  • Taste and adjust for salt and acidity by adding more adobo or lime juice. The goal is balance—earthy beans, bright lime, and garlicky depth.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Sprinkle diced raw onions and fresh lime zest on top for added texture and flavor.
  • Create a well in the hummus and fill it with Domestic Gourmet Organic Annatto Oil for additional depth and a luxurious mouthfeel.
  • Serve in a large bowl surrounded by green and yellow plantain chips or yuca crisps.
  • Spread on crostini and top with avocado, pickled red onions, and cilantro.
  • Use as a flavorful spread in wraps or sandwiches.
  • Add a scoop over rice or quinoa bowls for plant-based protein and a flavor boost.

Notes

Notes on including your child(ren):
Let your little chef(s) help strain the black beans or smell the fresh lime before juicing. They’ll explore textures, colors, and aromas—building curiosity and vocabulary around food.
Strengthen those fine motor skills and science knowledge by allowing your chef(s) to measure the Domestic Gourmet Organic Adobo and Annatto Oil, squeeze lime juice, or help scoop the hummus into small cups. These tasks strengthen coordination and early math skills while introducing simple science concepts, such as how oil conducts heat or how lime juice adds acidity.
Your older chef(s) can sauté onions under supervision and learn about the Maillard reaction—the science of flavor development. They’ll also practice following multi-step instructions and balancing flavors through tasting and adjusting.
Benefits
  • Encourages healthy eating through plant-based proteins
  • Strengthens motor skills and sensory awareness
  • Builds confidence and connection in the kitchen
